Reviews are one of the few local SEO factors you can steadily improve yourself, and they're often the deciding factor when someone compares you to the business down the road. The good news: most happy customers are willing to leave one. They just need to be asked at the right moment, in the right way.
Step 1: Get your direct review link
In your Google Business Profile, look for the option to ask for reviews or share a review form. Google gives you a short link that opens the review box directly. Save it somewhere you can paste it quickly.
Step 2: Ask at the moment of delight
The best time to ask is right after the customer is happiest: the job is finished and they've said thanks, the haircut looks great, the car's running again. A personal ask beats a generic email weeks later.
Step 3: Make it a habit, not a campaign
- Add the link to your invoice, receipt or follow-up text
- Put a small QR code at the counter or on a leave-behind card
- Ask every customer, not just the ones you're sure loved it
A steady trickle of recent reviews looks more trustworthy than a burst of twenty in one week followed by silence.
A simple text you can send
“Thanks again for choosing us today. If you have a minute, an honest Google review really helps a small business like ours: [link]”
What not to do
- Don't offer incentives. Discounts, gifts or entries into a drawing in exchange for reviews violate Google's policies.
- Don't “gate” reviews. Google's policies say not to discourage negative reviews or selectively ask only happy customers.
- Don't write, buy or swap fake reviews. Besides breaking Google's rules, the FTC's rule on fake reviews and testimonials, in effect since late 2024, allows civil penalties for fake reviews and for incentives tied to positive sentiment.
- Don't review your own business or have employees do it.
Reply to every review
Thank people for positive reviews specifically (“Glad the new water heater is working well”). For negative ones, stay calm, stick to facts, and offer to make it right offline. Future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews.
Show reviews on your website the honest way
Link to your Google reviews or embed them. Never paste in made-up testimonials or edit real ones to sound better. We build sites that point to real reviews and never invent them.
